What I Love about the First Page-ish...

What I Love about the First Page-ish of Susan Hatler’s TRUTH OR DATE

1) There are so many different ways to begin a story.  I love that the author begins with a definitive statement of what the protagonist wants in life and describes some of the obstacles she has faced in achieving that goal.

2) I love the way the author slips exposition into the prose so gracefully.  Notice how she characterizes Blissfully Bridal as “the most popular bridal boutique in downtown Sacramento?”  Now we know where the story takes place, and it was logical for her to tell us that information and in that manner.  Same goes for the information we learn about Kristen.

3) Gina is at a point in her life that is perfect for a meaningful romance.  She’s been dumped.  She’s been coping by eating ice cream, but she’s currently at her lowest point…which means that things can only improve for her.  (Which they will once she meets the love interest.)  The reader will enjoy following Gina from low to high because we all want the same progression for ourselves and our friends.
