1) INCITING INCIDENT ALERT — Dahlia’s life was chugging along normally, and now she has inherited a house and bookstore. Nothing will ever be the same after this moment…and we’re only on the first page!
2) It’s a small thing, but I love the way the author punctuated the lawyer’s first line of dialogue. The period makes a big difference. The narration has already cast the lawyer as annoying, so it makes sense that he would offer a robotic “Ms. Winters.” instead of a more fluid and human, “Ms. Winters, do you understand?”
3) The author is really good at packing in details in a graceful manner. As an activity, it might behoove us to underline all of the bits of description to see how we can maximize the descriptions in our own work.
