1) I love it. Ms. Corry begins the novel during a big moment in Ashlyn’s life. A transitional period. She just broke up with her boyfriend. This change compels the reader to ask questions that immerse us in the novel. What made Noah so bad? Will he respond poorly to the breakup? Will Ashlyn find someone new?
2) Notice how many of the sentences and paragraphs begin with “I?” Doesn’t it make sense for a teenager to think of themselves so often? Ms. Corry’s choice of sentence structure aids in characterizing her protagonist.
3) Those last three paragraphs refer to Luke Davenport posting a “BOYFRIEND WANTED” flyer around school on Ashlyn’s behalf. Even though we’re only on the first page-ish, there is a big confrontation in the offing.
