1) I love that Ruby, the protagonist, is characterized so clearly. She’s a musician through and through and sees the world through the lens of staves and quarter notes and G clefs. (I was the same kind of person in high school and college, but with writing instead of music.)
2) I love that the little dilemma Ruby confronts in the first page is going to be fulfilled by the rest of the novel’s narrative. Ruby is having trouble understanding love at first sight…so what do you think will happen to her later?
3) I salute the author for including some of Ruby’s lyrics. (And her false starts.) Including the artifacts of the protagonist’s art can be tricky. I’ve written novels that required me to write sections of a musical and standup comedy. This is a tough ask because the material needs to feel right to the reader, a person who only has the words in front of them, not the accompanying music or performance.
