What I Love about the First Page-ish...

What I Love about the First Page-ish of Luke Young’s FRIENDS WITH PARTIAL BENEFITS

1) The end of the novel excerpt is hilarious.  The author begins with writing that befits a totally traditional romance/piece of erotica and flips to the opposite.  (The flip side of an erection, of course, is a flaccid penis.)  The “whore in the pool” bit is also a funny incongruity.  The author establishes an appealing tone very quickly (while also releasing exposition about Jillian and her life.)

2) For obvious reasons, stories about writers appeal to me.  I do wonder if non-writers get sick of protagonists who are writers, but at the very least, I love that the average reader can relate to Jillian; they’ve ostensibly read plenty of novels and have some concept of how authors live.

3) I love the bit in which Jillian highlights and deletes her ex-husband.  Is there really anyone around who wouldn’t love to edit an ex out of their lives?  The author presents Jillian at her lowest (“most men are assholes”) so she will be ready for love with the male protagonist.  (Or at least friendship with benefits.)
