1) I love that the book begins in flashback. We see the characters at fourteen and then eighteen before we get into the bulk of the narrative that takes place seven years later. Why do I love it? Because our ideas about love and romance (and sex) change SO MUCH between fourteen and twenty-five. Showing us the characters’ journeys in those respects reminds us of our own.
2) Anna also begins with a crucial question: “What does it feel like to be in love?” Again, this quandary doesn’t resolve itself easily for many people…some folks never have a coherent answer…
3) The author keeps the dialogue tags simple and sparse. I like that. I want to focus on the dialogue while keeping track of who says what. These are very clear.
