1) I love the way the book starts with utter normalcy. It’s perfectly normal for a young woman to go to the mall with her friend. It’s perfectly normal for a kiosk vendor to try very hard to make a sale. The status quo is shattered when Felicia has her first experience with magic and her world is never the same. (INCITING INCIDENT ALERT!)
2) I also love the contrast between Felicia and Tasha. Characters should have complementary differences; the tension can help kick off a story.
3) The author uses “said” in most of the dialogue tags, but I love how she has the characters “hiss” at each other. “Said” is good most of the time; the words themselves should communicate the tone. On the other hand, playing around with different verbs is fun when you use them sparingly.
