1) It’s interesting that there are two modes of prose at work here. The first paragraph and the one that begins with “The horse was there” feature more “literary” diction and longer sentences with an intended internal rhythm. The rest of the narration offers simple and declarative sentences. (“I did this. I did that. Then I went to the store.”) Because this is first person, the binary narration adds to the characterization of the protagonist.
2) I love how disgusting and visceral some of the language is. The bile, the tinny scent of blood. These choices make sense for a horror novel.
3) We learn immediately that Jane’s mother is not well. While it’s a lamentable condition, a young adult forced to care for an ailing parent is a potent source of drama.
