1) At first, I wasn’t sure about the use of “very.” It’s not a rule, of course, but writers are often told to eschew the use of “very” in favor of more descriptive words. It turned out, however, that the authors had a reason to use “very.” I love how they paid off the rule of three.
2) The authors waste no time in establishing the situation: Kasey is out of a job, a home, and a relationship. All on the first page-ish. Some of the information is released in dialogue and some in the narration. What wonderful economy?
3) I suppose Jason is a little over-the-top with respect to being evil; he couldn’t possibly be more unpleasant. I think that the characterization works because the novel is a romantic comedy: a genre in which you can bend reality a little.
