1) “Preston Thornton III” and “Jessica Lind-Mallory” are PERFECT high-society names. (I am reminded of Dan Aykroyd’s character from Trading Places: Louis Winthorpe III.) The great name choice makes it clear immediately that these characters are upper-crust, and some of the tension in the book will arise from class conflicts.
2) I like the choice of the “ivory satin and lace dress” that Jessica is wearing. The color of the garment reminds us that she isn’t accustomed to manual labor or other “lower-class” things and the delicate fabric reinforces this idea.
3) Ms. Desmond is playing with a common and satisfying trope: the car has broken down, which forces Jessica to experience a different way of life. (And a different kind of guy…)
