1) I love that the book opens on the opening of Avery’s whole saga with Mason. Who were the characters before they met? I guess we’ll find out, but this is a romance novel…we want to know about their relationship. How did it start? (Mild spoiler: how did Avery become so miserable with Mason?)
2) I love that the second chapter reveals that Avery’s party was held on her “estate.” This is graceful exposition and characterization. Avery has always been rich, and it’s clear that some of the present-day drama will be impacted by class and money.
3) It’s a common trick, but an effective one: Avery’s wealth and security feed into a reader’s fantasy. No, we might not think about it 24/7, but we all have times during which we imagine what it would be like to have unlimited money and to live in a giant mansion. As is usually the case, the protagonist’s socioeconomic status is (probably) going to be used in the narrative in some manner. Avery’s husband has vast resources and power…how will she escape? Will Avery be forced to make a choice that could require her to make sacrifices in terms of lifestyle?
